The possible future number one pick of the draft just declared himself eligible for the NFL Draft: Reggie Bush. Bush, from USC, has been tagged as one of the most explosive players to come out of college football in recent memory. At the moment, the Houston Texans hold the first pick of the draft, and would probably select him if they do not trade down.
The Texans are coming off of a 2-14 season, but they do not really have an overwhelming running game.
"If they were to pick me, I wouldn't have a problem with that. I'm just excited to have an opportunity to make my mark at the next level, just to play for an NFL team," said Bush at a news conference Thursday. "Whatever team I go to, whether it's the Texans or another team, I hope I can build the same kind of relationships that I did with my teammates here."
Although the Texans could take a quarterback, specifically Vince Young or Matt Leinart, they will probably stick with David Carr, their number one pick from a few years ago.
Texans' general manager Charley Casserly has been pleased with Bush and Young declaring themselves eligible for the draft.
"All we can say is what has happened here with Reggie Bush and Vince Young declaring, with the addition of Matt Leinart among other players, is that you have a real strong top of the draft," Casserly said. "I think it's much stronger than it was a year ago. So what's that mean?
USC's head coach Pete Carroll knows that Bush could be a once of a lifetime type of back.
"He's a game-changer, with his speed, instincts, vision and competitiveness. He's just so much fun to watch," said Carroll. "He'll take that talent to the NFL and wow them there as a runner, receiver and as a returner. Now the Reggie Bush Show goes to Sundays, and I can't wait to watch him."
Bush is skipping his senior year to enter the draft. Bush is 6 feet tall and weighs 200 pounds. He had 2,890 all-purpose yards for the Trojans this year, including rushing, receiving, and kick return yards. He averaged 8.9 yards a carry, a seemingly ridiculously high number.
Bush won the Heisman trophy this year, just beating USC QB Matt Leinart and Texas QB Vinve Young. With Young's outstanding Rose Bowl performance, the Texans could always taunt other teams that they will take Young, hoping to force a trade for more picks.
