Things couldn't get any worse for the Miami Dolphins. They did.
After losing quarterback Trent Green (concussion) and Chris Chambers (trade) for the remainder of the season, the Dolphins lost their only weapon remaining on the roster: Ronnie Brown. Brown suffered a season-ending injury this past Sunday against the New England Patriots after tearing his ACL. The injury occurred in the third quarter and comes as a major blow considering he led the NFL in yards from scrimmage.
It's been a depressing season for the Miami Dolphins all around. Now, the Dolphins' only bright spot in an 0-7 season may cause problems for the future. Recovering fully from ACL injuries when you're a running back is not always a "sure" thing. This weekend, the Dolphins will be featured in the NFL's first regular season game outside of North American when they take on the New York Giants. You never like to count a team out, but signs are pointing to the Dolphins falling to 0-8 quite mercifully.
Running Back Alternatives for Miami
Miami still has to gut things out and find a running back for the remainder of the season though. They have three likely candidates, one of which has been confirmed to start this week:
• Jesse Chatman will start this weekend against the New York Giants. Chatman is an undrafted free agent who first came to the league with the San Diego Chargers back in 2002, where he saw limited regular season action up until 2004. His best season came in 2004, when he carried the ball 65 times for 392 yards and three touchdowns. With LaDainian Tomlinson and Michael Turner being featured since then, Chatman did not record a single statistic up until joining the Dolphins this year.
• The Dolphins' third-round draft pick this season, Lorenzo Booker may be worth a look at due to his youth. He has yet to see any action this season, constantly remaining on the team's practice squad.
• Remember Ricky Williams? It's time for the discussions regarding his status to be renewed
again. He applied for reinstatement to the league on October 1st, but head coach Cam Cameron stated that he will not comment on the situation until the NFL has made an official decision. Williams would by no means be a long-term answer, and chances are that if the team used him, they would do exactly what they did with Chambers: try to ship him away eventually.
Want to know what else is scary? The Dolphins are now down to their fifth of sixth safety in the secondary also. No one could have projected so many injuries for the Dolphins, who are well on their way to finishing the season without a victory.
