The New Orleans Saints signed kicker Billy Cundiff on Tuesday to be their kickoff specialist for this week's playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Cundiff was originally signed by the Saints before November 26th's game against the Atlanta Falcons. He was with the team through Week 16, before he was waived during the final week of the season.
John Carney will still be the team's field goal kicker of course. Cundiff will simply handle kickoffs, because the Saints believe he has better height and distance on his kickoffs. It represents one of the little things that head coach Sean Payton believes will lead his team to victory.
The Saints also reactivated defensive tackle Hollis Thomas, who had served a four-game suspension to close out the season. Thomas had been practicing with the team his suspension ended on January 1st, 2007. To make room for Cundiff and Thomas on the roster, the Saints placed veteran special teamer Fred McAfee on the injured reserve and waived defensive end Trevor Johnson.
