With the sixth pick in the NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected tight end Vernon Davis of Maryland. Davis was the best tight end in the draft by far, and is the most hyped tight end since Kellen Winslow Jr. of the Browns two years ago. He continues a nice foundation on the 49ers offense, which includes the young quarterback Alex Smith.
Davis finally gives the 49ers a receiving threat. He's probably their best receiver since Terrell Owens left the team. They already had tight end Eric Johnson, but he has been plagued by injuries the past several years. Davis will join some of the league's elite tight ends like Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates.
Scouting Information on Davis: Vernon Davis is another tight end coming out of the draft who is very athletic after playing football, basketball, and track. He played several different positions, but will be selected as a tight end in the draft. In his senior season, he caught 21 passes for 511 yards and five touchdowns. He caught 11 touchdowns in his junior season.
Davis will draw eyes from a lot of teams because he has the speed of a receiver to go along with the great strength that a tight end is expected to have. He has good hands and is able to run his routes very well. Davis will work in any system that utilizes the tight end position often and can be split out as a wide receiver to create special packages. There is some concern as to whether or not he can block well enough when he's not running a route.
