With Larry Johnson running for the Kansas City Chiefs, wouldn't it be nice to have Priest Holmes in the game to spell him very couple of downs? Maybe, but we won't get to see that this season. The team chose not to activate the team's former starting running back from the physically unable to perform list, effectively confirming the end of his season. Although medical tests showed that Holmes could have returned to action, he wanted to err on the side of caution. Holmes hopes to return next season.
"He does not, at this time, plan to give up football," said Carl Peterson, Chiefs general manager. "We're looking at another evaluation in January or February of '07."
Holmes has not played since October 30th of last season, when the Chiefs played the Chargers. He was hit linebacker Shawne Merriman in the game and left with head and neck trauma. He missed the final nine games of the season, which allowed Johnson to leave his mark as the team's new starting running back.
"We're 12 weeks into the regular season," Peterson said. "Without getting into the medical aspects of it, I think there were some questions as to whether he could have himself ready to play."
Holmes broke the touchdown record for running backs in 2003 when he rushed for 27 touchdowns. That record was broken by Shaun Alexander last season, who rushed for 28 touchdowns. LaDainian Tomlinson has a legitimate chance of breaking Alexander's record this season.
