The Pittsburgh Steelers released an intimidating presence on their defense when they cut ties with linebacker Joey Porter on Thursday. Porter, who has been a starter since 2000, was entering the final year of his contract. Porter would have received a $1 million bonus on March 6 if the Steelers had kept him on their roster.
"It's a business decision that was made," said Steelers spokesman Dave Lockett.
Porter had 60 sacks in 122 career games with the Steelers, which ranks fourth in team history. This past season, Porter had 64 tackles, seven sacks, and two interceptions.
