Maybe he'll have to go back to selling car insurance. The Pittsburgh Steelers released quarterback Tommy Maddox, the man who led them to the playoffs in 2002. Maddox was the starter for the Steelers heading into the 2004 season before suffering an injury after a 1-1 start. Rookie Ben Roethlisberger took over and was undefeated as a starter after that. It's obvious to say that Maddox never got his job back.
Maddox, who made a name for himself as one of the best players in Vince McMahon's one-year XFL league, struggled when called upon this past season. Roethlisberger missed several games due to injury, and Maddox could not pick up the slack. He was demoted to third-string and Charlie Batch filled in for Big Ben.
Maddox's biggest fault came against the Jacksonville Jaguars on October 16th when he threw for three interceptions. That includes a pick as time expired in overtime, costing the Steelers the game.
The Steelers also released cornerback Willie Williams.
