Could it be two years ago all over again? The Carolina Panthers' most valuable player from last season, wide receiver Steve Smith, was carted off the fied on Saturday due to a hamstring injury. During the afternoon session of training camp, Smith pulled up while he was running a long route down the left sideline. He felt the pain in his left hamstring right away before taking a few steps and falling to the ground. Smith slowly got back on his feet a little later.
"It seems like he probably strained it," said Panthers general manager Marty Hurney. "He's done this before in training camp."
Last year, Smith caught 103 passes for 1,563 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also had some hamstring problems back in June. Two years ago, Smith left was out of action for the entire season except for part of Week 1. That won't be the case in this instance, but it certainly has to be a fear for Panthers fans.
Defensive tackle Kris Jenkins also had injury problems after the workout. Jenkins, who is coming back from a knee injury, had back spasms after the workout. He only played in five games last year due to knee injuries.
"He made a move and took a hand in the muscle and suffered spasms," Hurney said.
Like Smith, Jenkins should not be affected to begin the regular season.
