Cleveland, OH. (PFCritics) -- If only one player was going to be taken in this year's supplemental draft, everyone knew it would have to be linebacker Ahmad Brooks. Many speculated that he would be taken in the third round, and possibly even the early part of the fourth round. Sure enough, the first and second rounds passed without a pick being made. Then, the San Francisco 49ers and the Miami Dolphins, two teams heavily favored to select Brooks, chose not to select him in the third round. That's when the Cincinnati Bengals, sitting at the 22nd spot, took action.
Brooks was kicked off the University of Virginia's football team last season due to some off-the-field problems. Before being kicked off the team though, Brooks was projected as a first-round draft pick in the future. Before he even entered college, many had Brooks pegged as the best defensive player in the country.
Brooks wasn't too impressive in his workouts in June, but the conditions that day could have been the cause. Regardless, Brooks has a chance to make a big impact on the Bengals, and become one of the better "steals" in the history of the NFL supplemental draft.
In order to attain Brooks, the Bengals had to give up a third-round draft choice in the 2007 draft. If Brooks lives up to his potential though, not a single person will care about the "lost" pick come next April.
