There's a new top free-agent on the market: Terrell Owens. In a move that has been expected since he was suspended this past season, the Philadelphia Eagles released Owens after not being able to trade him. Owens would have been due a $5 million roster bonus on Wednesday, which is why the Eagles decided to wait until now.
Owens helped lead the Eagles to the Super Bowl two years ago, but was too much of a hassle for the Eagles to handle. Owens was suspended after criticizing quarterback Donovan McNabb too much and causing general disturbances for the team.
In January, the team gave Owens permission to seek a trade. Teams knew the Eagles would release Owens, and didn't want to offer anything. It is believed that the Dallas Cowboys could be heavily interested in Owens, especially after they just released Keyshawn Johnson.
Due to Owens' controversy the past few years, it's doubtful that he will be offered a huge contract by anyone. In 2004, Owens caught 77 passes for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns before breaking his ankle. He returned to the Super Bowl, which the Eagles lost. Despite only playing in seven games last year, Owens had 47 catches for 763 yards and six touchdowns.
