The Houston Texans have parted ways with cornerback Phillip Buchanon, who was released Monday after being injured often with them this season. Buchanon was originally a first-round draft pick in the 2002 draft by the Oakland Raiders, but was traded to the Texans before last season for second- and third-round draft picks.
Buchanon suffered a sprained ankle and bruised ribs, and has resorted to being a backup as of late. He recorded two tackles this past week, filling in for Dunta Robinson who had some cramps. Buchanon had returned eight punts for 79 yards and five kick returns for 106 yards.
Last year, he was placed on the injured reserve with a high ankle sprain after ten games. Before his injury, he never lived up to his expectations with the Texans.
"When Faggins went down, Phillip had the opportunity to become a starting cornerback," said head coach Gary Kubiak. "Unfortunately, he got hurt and missed most of training camp. Then he got hurt in the first game. He had trouble staying on the field."
The Texans will add linebacker Kailee Wong to the active roster, removing him from the physically-unable-to-perform list.
