The Houston Texans continued the restructuring of their offense when they released quarterback
David Carr and running back
Domanick Williams on Friday. Both players have been a part of the Texans' losing seasons for several years now. The Texans already have new starters ready to fill both positions though, as they signed running back
Ahman Green several weeks ago and traded for quarterback
Matt Schuab yesterday.
Carr never really got going on an often-battered Texans team. In five seasons, he threw 65 interceptions and was sacked an unbelievable 249 times. That's not what the team had in mind when they selected him with their first overall pick as a new franchise.
If you're wondering who Williams is, he is the same person as Domanick Davis. He had his last name changed to "Williams," which is his mother's surname. Williams is the Texans' career rushing leader with 3,195 yards. He missed all of last season with a knee injury though, and was replaced by running back
Ron Dayne for the most part. Dayne flourished in that role late in the season, running for 429 yards and five touchdowns in December. The Texans re-signed Dayne on Friday, adding to the moves that have made in the offseason.
"It will be kind of weird without David next season, especially for the guys that have been there for a long time," Dayne said. "It won't be that big for me since I just got here. But we've got to move forward without him."
Although Dayne knows that Green will be the team's starter, he understands his role as a backup.
"It's OK," Dayne said. "I've been in the same position for most of my career. So I've been used to it. Whenever I get in I just want to do my best and help the team."
Meanwhile, Carr should draw interest from several teams around the NFL in search of depth at quarterback.
