The Houston Texans signed free agent running back Ron Dayne on Monday, adding to their much-needed depth at the running back position. Dayne was of the cuts for the Denver Broncos when naming their 53-man roster. Dayne was originally going to compete for the starting role on the Broncos, but an injury prevented him from staying in line with Mike Bell and Tatum Bell.
The Texans other running backs are young - rookie Wali Lundy and second-year player Vernand Morency. Domanick Davis was going to be the team's starter until he suffered an injury and was placed on the injured reserve, meaning he'll miss the entire season.
Last year, Dayne had 53 carries for 270 yards for the Broncos. He was originally the 11th overall pick in the 2000 draft by the New York Giants, but never lived up to his expectations. At the moment, it is not known who will get the bulk of the carries for the Texans in Week 1.
