After a year of heartbreak, Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy will return to the team for at least one more yet. The Colts were hoping to make the Super Bowl after going 14-2 during the season, including a 13-0 start. The Colts were upset in their own stadium by the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, 21-18.
Dungy suffered a tragedy when his son, James, committed suicide after the Colts first loss. It was rumored that Dungy may call it quits to spend more time with his family.
"I was always coming back unless I said I wasn't," said Dungy, via the team.
After losing to the Steelers, Dungy said he was 100 percent sure he would return if the Colts asked him back. A few days later though, Dungy said he was not sure how things would go in the coming days.
"My only reservation is that I really don't know how I'll react in the next few days," he said.
Dungy has been classified as one of the true "good guys" in the league. All of the players praise Dungy for everything that he does. His team has won three consecutive AFC South titles, but have yet to reach the Super Bowl. The Colts felt they could have gone 16-0 this year, but they were upset at home by the San Diego Chargers in Week 15.
Now, Dungy is prepared to fulfill his three-year contract extension, which would allow him to be the Colts' head coach through 2009.
"I could walk away without it," said Dungy last week. "That's something a lot of guys have to walk away without. But I'll do it when the time is right, and right now, I don't think the time is right."
