The Dallas Cowboys finally have an accurate kicker. The Cowboys signed Mike Vanderjagt right after the Colts agreed to a deal with Adam Vinatieri. Vanderjagt signed a three-year deal with Dallas.
During his career, Vanderjagt has connected on 87.5 percent of his field goals, which is the best in NFL history. He missed a critical kick in the postseason this past season though. The Colts understood the situation.
"Everyone kind of had it a foregone conclusion that Mike wouldn't be back, but you don't just get rid of guys without being able to replace them," said Colts head coach Tony Dungy. "We were fortunate that we were able to replace him with a great, great kicker."
The Cowboys have not been able to settle on a kicker the past few years. This past season, they went through Billy Cundiff, Jose Cortez, and Shaun Suisman. Combined, they connected on 73 percent of their field goals.
Vanderjagt's character has always been questioned, however Dungy knows he was an outstanding player.
"Mike was tremendous for us in the time that I was here," said Dungy, who just finished his fourth season in Indianapolis. "He made some kicks that won divisions for us, that won big games, overtime games, and I never thought that he was going to miss when we sent him out."
His best year was in 2003, when he was 37-of-37 on field goals. This past season, he was 23-of-25. His career long field goal is 54 yards.
