The Dallas Cowboys waived kicker Mike Vanderjagt on Tuesday, despite the fact that he holds the mark as the league's most accurate kicker in history. That didn't matter this season, as he had a career low 72 percent conversion rate, making 13-of-17 field goals. Vanderjagt has been known as somewhat of a "head case" when it comes to clutch situations, and the Cowboys didn't want to deal with it anymore.
"Obviously, I feel better than having stayed the course the other way," said Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells.
Replacing Vanderjagt will be veteran kicker Martin Gramatica. Gramatica has only played in three games since the 2004 season, and marks yet another change at the position for Dallas. The team has not been able to settle on a kicker for years.
"I thought he was the best option available," said Parcells, regarding Gramatica.
Vanderjagt no longer had the complete confidence of Parcells, which affected his coaching decisions during games.
"The last four, five weeks, I don't think he was hitting the ball, to the point where I think it made us play the game a little differently. And we just weren't able to put him out there with a lot of confidence," Parcells said. "It's just a confidence thing. When it starts affecting how you're playing, you've got to try something else."
Vanderjagt missed most of the preseason due to injury. If a playoff contending team suffers an injury to their kicker in the coming weeks though, there is a good chance that Vanderjagt will receiver a quick call to jump to another team.
