First, the Atlanta Falcons were expected to have an adjustment period this year with a new head coach trying to get
Michael Vick in sync with the offense. Then, a major spark the offense had was removed due to the recent charges brought against Vick, including the fact that he cannot attend training camp. Now, perhaps the only spark the team had left, is gone as well. Starting running back
Warrick Dunn will miss three to four weeks after having back surgery. With that said, Dunn should only miss the team's first two preseason games, and should be ready to play on opening day.
"I felt some discomfort in my back and legs that just never subsided," Dunn stated. "After consulting with the medical staff, it was recommended that we have the surgery."
During the first few weeks of camp, the team will feature second-year man
Jerious Norwood as their running back. Norwood ran for 633 yards as a rookie last year. With Vick gone, backup quarterback
Joey Harrington will be handing off to him during camp.
"The doctors told me that the discomfort would have lingered throughout the 2007 season had we not had the surgery, so I felt like this was the best course of action for me," Dunn said. "I've had a tremendous offseason, and I feel great. I plan to come back stronger than ever and will do everything I can to help us get back to the playoffs."
Still, nothing says that Dunn will be well-adjusted and acclimated to football right away following his surgery. If that's the case, Norwood could begin the season as the team's starter.
